Position Descriptions

Director: The director comes up with the overall vision for the show. They work closely with the designers offstage and actors onstage to ensure that their vision comes to life.

Stage Manager: The stage manager attends all rehearsals and takes notes for lines and blocking as well as makes sure that there are rehearsal props, set pieces, and sometimes costumes for the rehearsal process. During the run of the show, the SM makes sure that all necessary actors and crew are present, and calls cues during the show.

Assistant Stage Manager: The assistant stage manager assists with props, costumes, or set (sometimes all three) during the rehearsal and show period. This position is great for learning more about backstage without being in charge of everything.
*This role is great for all skill levels!

Running Crew: During the run of the show, the running crew assists backstage with costumes, props, and changing set pieces during scene changes.
*This role is great for all skill levels!

Sound/Lighting Operator: During the run of the show, the light/sound operator is responsible for making sure that the lighting or sound board is ready to go for the show. This may include checking speaker levels for sound and testing that all lights are working for lights.
*This role is great for all skill levels!

Sound Designer: The sound designer is responsible for obtaining all sounds used in a production. This could include sound effects like a bell ringing or finding the right atmospheric music to set a scene. The sound designer works closely with the director and lighting designer to help create the atmosphere of the show. They are also responsible for making sure all sounds included are not subject to copyright, and if they are – acquiring the proper license to use them.
**You don’t need experience to sound design, but experience in theatre is an asset. If you’re interested in learning more about sound design, or would like to be an assistant sound designer, contact us for more info.

Lighting Designer: The lighting designer works with the director, set designer, and sound designer to create the lights for the play. Lights are essential in setting the mood and tone of a play, and can subtly help to create the mood onstage.
**You don’t need experience to design lights, but experience in theatre is an asset. If you’re interested in learning more about lighting design, or would like to be an assistant lighting designer, contact  us for more info.

Set Designer: The set designer works closely with the director, lighting designer, sound designer, and show carpenter to create the physical world of the set. This involves designing what each scene will look like, as well as colours and furniture/furnishings in each scene.
