The Tin Woman
This is a two-act comedy/drama play set in present day.
“Instead of relishing life after her heart transplant, Joy enters a downward spiral, unsure whether she truly deserves a second chance. Meanwhile, Alice and Hank mourn the loss of their son, Jack, whose heart was used to save Joy. At a friend’s urging, Joy tracks down Jack’s family to find closure. But are Alice, Hank, and their daughter Sammy ready to accept Jack’s death? Based on a true story, The Tin Woman uses humor and pathos to explore loss, family, and what it means to be given new life.”

Characters Summary: Suggested ages
4F (20-60+)
2 M (30,60+)
Cast of Characters:
JOY, mid-20s to late-30s Female, Lead Role
A freelance graphic artist. Joy has received a life-saving heart transplant but is conflicted about what to do with her new life. Smart, acerbic, attractive but rudderless with her new lease on life.
HANK, early 60s+, Male, Supporting Role
Nearing retirement as head of a small building supplies company. Husband to Alice, father to Sammy and the now-deceased heart donor, Jack. Hank is pushing forward, trying very hard not to wallow or acknowledge his grief and guilt about Jack.
JACK, mid 30s Male, Support Role
An accountant with aspirations of being a photographer. Jack died in a car accident. His heart was donated to Joy. Jack appears throughout the show watching the events unfold, as well as during flash-backs.
Jack remains on stage for most of the play. Requires a male with a strong stage presence and incredible patience.
ALICE, early 60s+, Female, Supporting Role
Mother to the deceased Jack and to Sammy. She’s a solid, loving and enduring presence. A big heart that is dealing with its own pain while trying to hold the family together.
SAMMY, 20-30s, Female, Support Role
Sammy is Jack’s younger sister and daughter of Alice and Hank. A new-age pre-school teacher. She writes a blog that over-shares her life and lets emotions get the better of her.
NURSE / DARLA 20s up to 60s, Female, Dual Role
Nurse is a very competent but somewhat annoying person.
Darla is Joy’s best friend. A functionary, somewhat flamboyant, artsy, very caring friend.
