French Poison is based on the true crime of Marie Capelle (1816-1852), a descendant of Louis XIII of France, who was accused ofpoisoning her husband Charles Lafarge. Charles, who conveyed himself to be a wealthy iron master with 30,000 francs annual income, convinced Marie to marry him in August 1839. After arriving at Charles’s Le Grandier Estate, she found that all had been a lie and that Charles was in fact bankrupt and that the estate was in complete disrepair and infested with rats!
