The Story
Based on true events, the Drowning Girls recounts the story of Bessie, Alice and Margaret, three Edwardian-era brides who emerge from their clawfoot bathtubs to gather evidence against their womanizing, murderous, husband. As they make their case, by reliving the shocking events leading up to their deaths. they discover how they have been victimized not only by a husband, but also by society at large. Full of rich images, a variety of characters, a quirky sense of humour and lyrical language. The Drowning Girls is both breathtaking storytelling and social critique.
Casting for:
Beatrice Munday: Fearful, lonely, and worried about becoming an aging “old maid”, making her vulnerable to George’s quick charm.
Alice Burnham: Young, spirited, and rebellious, yet she struggles with heavy self-blame and hindsight after falling into the killer’s trap.
Margaret Lofty: Cautiously proper with a hidden, tender girlishness, who feels entirely “out of her depth” once trapped in the doomed marriage.Aside from playing their main character, the three actresses also fluidly step into minor supporting roles (such as conductors, mothers, and other acquaintances) to help piece together their tragic stories.
